Let's Talk: GMG Samuel Williams, Jr. - Selah Youth Choir

Let's Talk: GMG Samuel Williams, Jr. - Selah Youth Choir

Samuel Williams, Jr. Selah is a dynamic youth gospel choir with members ranging in ages 5- to 18-years-old. The ministry was formed (circa 2002) with the humble number of 6 members, under the vision to establish a choir at St. Sabina Catholic Church in Chicago, IL, through which youth could share in the rich experience of leading worship and praise. Shortly after it’s founding, Julie Welborn (then Youth Minister) approached Samuel Williams, Jr., an Alumnus of Walt Whitman and the Soul Children of Chicago, to help lead the fledgling choir. After accepting the position of Team Leader/Director of Selah, Sam realized that in order to have a choir that operated in excellence, he had to change the originally set rehearsal schedule from twice a month to every week. •Sam then recruited Jacinta Warnie, a Princeton Graduate, Former Director of the Princeton University Gospel Ensemble and Multiple Choir Alumna as a Co-Team Leader to support the group. Sam also extended the time of rehearsals from one hour to between one and one half to two hours weekly. With the coupling of consistent caring leadership, grounding in the Word of God, and disciplined rehearsals, the group began to grow in number, in vocal strength, and most importantly, spiritually. •Selah quickly began to be recognized across the city of Chicago for their strong vocals, dynamic energetic performances, joyous hearts and sweet spirits. Particularly in this perilous time when so much negative light is cast upon youth, Selah began to be infectious in a great and awesome way! They have performed and shared their ministry with artists and at venues including, but not limited to: • Chance the Rapper (Featured on Chance the Rapper’s Twitter Site) • CSO (Chicago Symphony Orchestra) • Michelle Williams (Formerly of Destiny’s Child) • Jennifer Hudson • Jazz Artists Dave Koz & Jonathan Butler and many others. •The Group is now 35-40 members strong and has released their first self-titled CD Project: Sam Williams & Selah St. Sabina Youth Choir of Chicago! •Please send me an email sharing your thoughts about this show segment also if you have any suggestions of future guests you would like to hear on the show. Don’t Bother Me, I Can’t Cope was a musical written by Miki Grant and directed by Vinnette Carroll.  This production not only included Gospel music, it also included jazz, funk, soul, calypso and soft rock. •In this musical which is the second production I have found to have Alex Bradford playing an important part contributing his talents as a feature character/actor/singer along with his wife Alberta Bradford.  She played a role as singer and actress in the Broadway production.  Alberta Bradford was not only a singer; she was a musician and songwriter who not only played for her husband Alex Bradford and his group; she also played for other singing aggregations such as Chesapeake Choral Union, the National Convention of Gospel Choirs & Choruses and several other groups. •The play itself focused on the African-American experience with songs reflecting various topics about ghetto life, student protests, Black power and feminism. •This show was the Directorial debut of Vinnnette Carroll who was the first black woman to direct a play on Broadway.  The play was written by Micki Grant; singer, actress, writer and composer.  Micki was a featured actress in one of the earlier soap operas “Another World. •with Calvin Gibbs, Jr. as Co-Host •Please send me an email sharing your thoughts about this show segment also if you have any suggestions of future guests you would like to hear on the show. Let's Talk: GMG Tribute Show Frank Biggs & St. Agatha Catholic Church

•Frank Biggs and the Historic St. Agatha Catholic Church (Celebrating 131 years in 2023) •Frank was a musician, director, singer and pioneer in the Catholic Church.  He founded the FIRST Gospel choir in the Archdiocese of Chicago, IL on the Westside at the historic St. Agatha Catholic Church under the pastor Fr. John Barlow in 1972. •Frank began his career at St. Agatha as the Minister of Music for the church a few years prior where he played the Pipe Organ and Grand Piano for all of the services.  He also sang and occasionally had one or two soloists sing the traditional Catholic hymns and chants. •With the community changing in the Lawndale community and more African American families attending services the Pastor along with Frank knew there had to be some musical changes, especially with Latin language Mass being phased out.  Under the Pastoral leadership of Fr. John Barlow, Frank Biggs asked to start a Gospel Choir to sing at one of the 3 Sunday Masses. •St. Agatha Catholic Church became the First Catholic Church in the Chicago Archdiocese to sing traditional Gospel music (and sang like a Protestant choir.) •Please send me an email sharing your thoughts about this show segment also if you have any suggestions of future guests you would like to hear on the show.
